Multi-platinum recording artist Big Sean has added “author” to his already impressive resume with the release of his first book, “Go Higher: Five Practices for Purpose, Success, and Inner Peace.” Available now, the book aims to provide readers with a roadmap to self-discovery, drawing upon Sean’s personal experiences and offering practical guidance for everyday mental wellness.

A Personal Journey to Inner Peace

“Go Higher” isn’t just another celebrity memoir. It’s a hybrid self-help book that blends personal anecdotes with actionable strategies. Big Sean opens up about his own struggles with anxiety and depression, sharing the techniques he’s used to navigate his journey toward inner peace and success. These include journaling, affirmations, and meditation, offering readers step-by-step instructions on how to cultivate self-awareness and mindfulness.

Sean emphasizes that writing this book was a two-year process of self-reflection. He collaborated with Jay Shetty, a bestselling author in his own right, who wrote the foreword to “Go Higher”. Sean says a conversation with Shetty sparked the initial idea for the book.

He told Detroit Metro Times that the deaths of friends like Mac Miller, Nipsey Hussle and Kobe Bryant inspired him to write the book, saying he had “a bad habit… of always counting on things always being there”.

Five Essential Practices

At the heart of “Go Higher” are five essential practices that Sean believes are crucial for achieving purpose, success, and inner peace:

  1. Accepting: Acknowledging and embracing oneself and one’s circumstances, both positive and negative, as a foundation for growth.
  2. Strategizing: Developing a clear plan of action to achieve goals, breaking down large tasks into manageable steps.
  3. Trying: Taking consistent action and pushing oneself outside of one’s comfort zone to overcome challenges and achieve progress.
  4. Trusting: Having faith in oneself, the process, and the universe, even when faced with uncertainty or setbacks.
  5. Manifesting: Visualizing and actively working towards desired outcomes, aligning thoughts, feelings, and actions with one’s goals.

He shares self-reflection prompts, agreements, affirmations and meditations that he has used over the years.

From Detroit Rapper to Mental Health Advocate

Big Sean’s journey to becoming a mental health advocate is deeply rooted in his personal experiences. Having achieved significant success in the music industry, selling over 185 million records worldwide, starring in films, receiving six Grammy nominations and collaborating with big brands like Puma and Adidas, he discovered that external achievements weren’t enough to guarantee inner peace.

He decided to share his experiences in order to help others who may be struggling with similar challenges. In “Go Higher,” he recounts specific stories and experiences from his life, tying them into the five practices he outlines. This approach aims to add context and realism to his blueprint for encouraging ideas.

“Go Higher” Receives Praise and Support

Since its release, “Go Higher” has garnered positive attention from various figures in the wellness and entertainment industries. Deepak Chopra, the founder of the Chopra Foundation, called the book “a thoughtful guide to achieving inner peace and purposeful success.”

Fans and followers have also expressed their enthusiasm for the book, praising Big Sean for his vulnerability and willingness to share his personal journey. The book is available in hardcover, paperback, and audiobook formats, with Sean himself narrating the audiobook version.

Proceeds to Benefit Wildfire Victims

In light of the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, Big Sean announced that all proceeds from “Go Higher” through the end of February will be donated to fire victims. This commitment underscores Sean’s dedication to using his platform to support those in need and promote positive change.

Addiction and Overcoming Difficult Times

Big Sean has spoken openly about overcoming addiction and depression. He has specifically warned of the dangers of Adderall and similar drugs. He notes that life is the greatest inspiration.

He has said that getting through his tough times involved prioritizing himself, working out, reconnecting with things he wanted to do, and trying new things such as “jumping outta planes” and “going to the gun range.” He also started watching anime again.

A Spiritual Guidebook for Our Times

“Go Higher: Five Practices for Purpose, Success, and Inner Peace” presents itself as a spiritual guidebook for our times. Big Sean’s book encourages people to invest in themselves and that doing so does not drain your energy but rather gives you the energy to reach your fullest potential.
